Church Avenue, Killeen, Texas 76541. Wood's Drug Store. Store located on north side of Avenue D between 4th Street and 6th (Gray) Street. Photograph from late 30s or early 40s. Man in center of picture (hands on hips) is Weaver Jackson, co-manager at the time of the photo. The store was owned by Dr. D. L. Wood who operated a medical practice above Well's Meat Market (to the right of Woods). The business was established in 1907 by Dr. Wood and a colleague, Dr. W. H. "Billy" Atkinson, and by 1912 Dr. Wood was the sole owner. The business remained in the Wood family for 72 years. During the 1930s, the store was managed by Wood's son, D. L. Wood, Jr., Wood's brother Clarence and a brother-in-law, Weaver Jackson. The store became a gathering place for local news and visiting. The store merged with the Service Drug Store, also owned by the Wood family, in 1963 and was located at 416 N. Gray Street. The business sustained a fire in 1969 but was re-built in the same location. The store was closed in November 1979. Dr. Wood, one of Killeen's most popular doctors, was born January 12, 1872 in Mississippi. His family moved to Belton in 1881. Wood attended Vanderbilt University, studied in Chicago, and graduated from Tulane University. Wood moved to Killeen in 1901. Wood married Cynthia Adeline "Addie" Everett in 1896 and the couple had 9 children. The Wood home, built in 1904, was on the SE corner of 4th Street and Church Avenue and remained there until it was removed in 1980. Dr. Wood was active in the community, serving as mayor from 1909-1911 and on the local school board. He passed away on February 23, 1943. 20061220. Photograph number 60.
